Dr. James D. Kim is a fellowship trained retina specialist. He graduated high school in Sydney, Australia where he achieved a perfect score on the HSC (an Australian University entrance exam) and received the Premier’s medal as the top student in Australia. Then Dr. Kim came to the United States and graduated from University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. Prior to attending medical school, Dr. Kim received a Master of Science degree in Bio technology from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. In addition, Dr. Kim received a second Master of Science Degree in Physiology and Biophysics from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He stayed at Georgetown University and received his Doctor of Medicine degree.
Dr. Kim completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch where he served as chief resident. He was awarded numerous accolades including:
- Silver Scalpel Award for recognition of his superior surgical skills
- Best Research Awards for outstanding achievement in furthering ophthalmology research, nomination as university-wide exemplary resident
- Resident Citizenship Award
After his ophthalmology residency, Dr. Kim was selected as a vitreoretinal surgery fellow at the Eye Institute in Medical College of Wisconsin, one of the premier retina fellowships in the country.
Dr. Kim has extensive medical and surgical training in retinal diseases including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, complex retinal detachments and diabetic tractional retinal detachments.
Dr. Kim has been involved in research for many years including National Institute of Health and Johns Hopkins Medical Institute. He has numerous research publication in top medical journals and book chapters. He has presented his works at national and international meetings. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association and the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Kim is happily married to Dr. Suejean Park, associate professor of violin at Murray State University and Concertmaster of the Paducah Symphony Orchestra. They have two daughters. Dr. Kim enjoys mountain biking, snowboarding, fishing and traveling. He is fluent in Spanish and Korean.
